The 42nd annual Religious Sisters’ Appreciation Day was held on Sunday August 11th at St. Patrick’s Parish Center in Kansas City, KS.  One hundred and eighty-two sisters from twenty-six area congregations enjoyed an afternoon of fellowship, good food and bingo.  The event was  coordinated by the Serra Club of Kansas City in KS, with support from all six of the KC Metro area Serra Clubs.  Fifty-seven Serrans and thirty spouses and guests were on hand to assist with parking, registration, popcorn, drinks, food service, bingo and prizes.

Each of the sisters received a small monetary gift which we're sure is put to good use.  Gifts and other expenses are paid for by money donated by Serrans, churches, businesses, and friend of the sisters.  Funds remaining after the event are added to the Sister’s Formation Fund to be used for grants to Religious Congregations to help cover the expenses for sisters entering the religious life.

The planning for this event began in March. Ten team coordinators met every month to make this an enjoyable day for the sisters. I will just tell you about two of the teams.

The Donations Team, led by George Riehle, created letters to be mailed to our donors. George also sends a “Thank You” letter to each donor so they have verification that they donated to a 501(c)(3) charity. Each member of the Planning Team asked  for donations from their friends, parishes, and businesses. Larry and Nora Volz who have been strong supporters of the Sisters have over the years collected well over $25,000 from our donors.

The Drink Team was led by Will Miller. He and Kevin Caldwell purchased the drinks, prepared the bar, recruited a team of bar tenders and servers to provide beverage service to the sisters and Serrans. They were also assisted by a few young men and woman who help by serving popcorn and assist the sisters during the dinner.

This is a must attend event for many Serrans.  If you haven't been part of the fun, be sure to register next year.  Here is a slideshow from this year's event.
